Getting started

What is SADFinder?

SADFinder is a file manager for macOS built for people who miss Windows Explorer. It adds real tabs, an editable path bar you can type into, a quick filter, proper control over your Desktop, and Rectangle-style window snapping — all native and keyboard-first.

What do I need to run it?

macOS Sequoia or Tahoe, on Apple Silicon or Intel. It needs roughly 200 MB of disk space and runs comfortably in 2 GB of RAM. The full list is on the system requirements page.

How do I install it?

Download the .dmg from this site, drag SADFinder into your Applications folder, and launch it. On first launch macOS asks for a few permissions — allow them so window snapping and the global shortcuts work.

How is it different from Finder?

Finder hides the file path, forgets your tabs between sessions, and has no window snapping. SADFinder gives you a path bar you can click into and edit, tabs that stay where you left them, real Desktop control, and snap-to-half-or-quarter shortcuts. The migration guide maps it to the muscle memory you already have.

Is SADFinder a Finder alternative?

Yes. SADFinder is a Finder alternative for macOS that brings Windows File Explorer-style behavior to the Mac: Enter opens a folder or file, Backspace goes up a level, Delete sends to the Trash, and Cmd+R renames in place. It is a native SwiftUI app — no Electron — built keyboard-first for people who miss Windows Explorer or find Finder limiting.

Trial, pricing & billing

Is there a free trial?

Yes — 7 days, every feature, no credit card to start. We email a reminder before it ends; nothing is charged unless you continue on a paid plan.

Do I need a card to start the trial?

No. The 7-day trial starts with just your email — no card. You only enter payment details if you continue on $5/month, or buy the $29.99 lifetime license.

How much does it cost after the trial?

$5 per month, or $29.99 as a one-time lifetime purchase for up to 3 Macs. Both are the same app with ongoing updates and improvements. See the pricing page for details.

How many Macs can I use it on?

Up to 3 of your Macs at the same time, on a monthly subscription or lifetime license.

How do I cancel?

Cancel any time from the Billing section of your account. You keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for.

Can I buy once instead of subscribing?

Yes — choose the $29.99 lifetime license on the pricing page. It is a one-time purchase for up to 3 Macs.

Can I get a refund?

Yes — 14 days, no questions asked, on a first-time purchase. The details are in the refund policy.

Privacy & support

Does SADFinder collect my data or upload my files?

No. SADFinder runs entirely on your Mac — file names, paths, contents, and folder structure never leave your machine. The Mac app has no analytics, no telemetry, and no crash reporting. The public website uses Google Analytics with analytics cookies disabled unless you accept them; the account dashboard does not. The app contacts our server only to activate and revalidate your license. The privacy policy has the full picture.

Does it work offline?

Yes. SADFinder caches your license and revalidates it about once a week in the background. If you're offline — or our servers are down — the app keeps working for up to 14 days before it asks you to reconnect.

How do I get help or report a bug?

Email hello@sadfinder.com or use the contact form. You will get a real reply, usually within a day or two.

Switching from Finder & other file managers

What is the best Finder alternative for macOS?

SADFinder is a native macOS file manager built as a Finder alternative for people who want Windows File Explorer behavior on the Mac. Enter opens the selected item, Backspace goes up a level, Delete sends it to the Trash, and Cmd+R renames in place. It adds tabs, an editable path bar you can type into, a quick filter, real Desktop control, and Rectangle-style window snapping — all keyboard-first and native SwiftUI. It runs on macOS Sequoia and Tahoe, for $5/month or $29.99 once.

Is there a Windows-style file manager for Mac?

Yes. SADFinder brings Windows File Explorer-style behavior to macOS: Enter opens a folder or file instead of renaming it, Backspace navigates up a level, Delete moves items to the Trash, Cmd+R renames in place, and Cmd+X cuts and moves files. It also has tabs, an editable path bar, a quick filter, and keyboard window snapping to halves and quarters. It is Mac-only and supports macOS Sequoia and Tahoe.

How is SADFinder different from Finder, Path Finder, or ForkLift?

SADFinder focuses on Windows Explorer muscle memory and keyboard-first navigation on native macOS. Compared with Finder, it adds an editable path bar, tabs that include reopen-last-closed, real Desktop control, Windows-style Enter/Backspace/Delete keys, and Rectangle-style window snapping. Compared with Path Finder or ForkLift, SADFinder is deliberately lean and keyboard-driven rather than a dual-pane, feature-maximalist suite — the goal is for Windows switchers to feel at home immediately. It is a native SwiftUI app for macOS Sequoia and Tahoe, $5/month or $29.99 once.

Does SADFinder support Enter-to-open and Delete-to-Trash like Windows?

Yes. SADFinder maps the keys the way Windows does: Enter opens the selected folder or file rather than renaming it, Delete sends items to the Trash (Cmd+Delete skips the Trash), and Backspace goes up one level. To rename in place you press Cmd+R, and Cmd+X cuts and moves files. These defaults are what make it feel like File Explorer on the Mac.
